The hard, high-density soapstone used in Tulikivi fireplaces has unique heat-retention properties. The concept is simple: made of elegant, sensuous soapstone, the environmentally responsible wood-burning Tulikivi takes advantage of a thermal-mass principle used for centuries in Scandinavian fireplaces. Unlike a conventional fireplace, which sends warm air up your chimney, the Tulikivi soaks up the fire's heat and stores it. Then it slowly and gently releases the warmth. And, because the stone generates a natural, evenly circulated radiant heat (like the warmth of the sun), the air in your house is never too hot or dry.
A Tulikivi fireplace allows you to experience the best of both worlds. You can enjoy the romance of a crackling fire. And at the same time, you can heat your house efficiently and cleanly.
A Tulikivi fireplace is easy to start. Simply build a fire in the same way as in a conventional fireplace (depending on the model, you'll need only one or two armloads of wood). With the glass doors shut and the damper fully open, the fire burns brisk and hot, allowing the soapstone walls to soak up the heat.

1. When wood burns in the firebox high temperatures are reached quickly, forcing the burning gases up through the throat of the fireplace.
2. The hot gases are then guided down and out into the side channels, where the heat is released into the exterior stones.
3. As the air is heated by the exterior walls, it creates a convection current so that the heat circulates evenly throughout the room.
The Tulikivi is efficient. Soapstone is a soft-textured stone that possesses unrivaled heat-retaining properties. In fact, by volume, it retains more than twice as much heat as ordinary masonry brick. And it absorbs the heat faster and radiates it longer. The absorbent stone holds heat extremely well. After the fire is out, the fireplace radiates warmth from all the stone surfaces, ensuring an even, long-lasting heat supply.
When a fire kindled in a Tulikivi burns out completely (typically
after 1 to 1 1/2 hours) simply close the door damper. Your Tulikivi will
continue to radiate a constant, even heat for 12 to 24 hours - without
a fire burning!
Heat from a Tulikivi is comfortable - and never dangerously hot (when fired
properly). Scientific studies show radiant heat among the healthiest forms
available.
